On this issue of pawn facts I would like to share some trivial you won’t find under normal searches of pawnshops. When I first thought of writing this blog, I found myself a little overwhelmed but yet intrigued by the number of fascinating details about pawn broking. Honestly I had no knowledge, of pawnshops or for that matter any care, until the history channel released their popular television show, Pawn Stars. Pawn Stars, a series that features three generations of the Harrison family along with their long time family friend, Chum Lee, who both own and operate the Las Vegas’ Gold and Silver Pawn Shop. This program showcases the ins and outs of the pawnbroking industry, which can include selling or pawning unusual merchandise people all around the world bring to the store on a daily basis. This being in Las Vegas we are talking about some really unusual items. A death clock, Elvis’s winter coat, Paul Revere’s, spoon just to name a few.
The release of this show couldn’t have had better timing for pawnshops. Currently the roughly 12,000 pawnshops existent in the U.S cater to 10 percent of our populations in the United States. This business has been in the steady decline for the last couple of decades. But with the release of Pawn Stars, pawnshops around the nation are now flourishing from the success of the show. By watching this show people find what they might have considered junk is actually valuable antiques that they can make money from. Through selling or pawning items, pawn shops, in their own small way, are helping our emerging economy by freeing up money, already spent on items around the house and allowing it to be used on buying even more items, thus helping our economy.
